DC Nguyen wins RWC pool tourney

Last week, DC Nguyen took the title of champ in the fiercely competitive pool tournament at RWC. The tournament, which is held quarterly in the student life lounge, was tough, and the competition was heated. With six competitors all vying for the top spot, the lounge got crazy! To keep concentration, the players kept their thoughts on what they all had come there to get: the first place, a sweet prize, and the chance to have the title of RWC’s top pool player.

Six may have tried, but only one could take the cake. DC Nguyen, a marketing and management student, came out on top, defeating all five of the other players.

One by one, the competitors dropped like flies after being squashed by the untouchable Nguyen. A few spectators that had already seen Nguyen play didn’t seem shocked by this.

“I knew from the beginning that no one else had a chance,” said pool player, Nilesh Hari.

Jon Minges, pool player and friend to the champ, commented on Nguyen’s talent, saying, “He is definitely one of the top players of all time that has come to play at the Raymond Walters tournament. I’ve seen a lot of skilled players come out and compete over the years, but nothing that holds a breath against DC’s smooth shot and risky style.”

When announced as winner, Nguyen’s reaction was surprisingly reserved and humble, not the normal reaction for the champ of a big league pool tourney like this. Why was he so relaxed and calm? It was probably due to the fact that he is a seasoned vet in winning; he won the same exact tournament last year!

He was awarded a brand new high quality pool stick, which was a great prize for such an avid pool player. Second place was Tim Christy, who received a brand-new Raymond Walters sweatshirt!

Because he is so talented and skilled, he believes it is his responsibility to pass on his plethora of knowledge to students with no skills at all. He has even been teaching a friend, Jeff, working with him to improve his skills and technique.

The quarterly pool tournaments are put on by the RWC Student Life Office and are held in the Student Life Lounge, Room 127 of Muntz Hall.

Student Life offers a variety of fun activities for students. The lounge, where the tournament was held, has ping-pong, pool, and foosball tables, as well as comfy couches and a flat screen TV. The lounge is open to students all day and is a great place to come between classes to relax, kill time, have some fun, or just hang out with other students.

The next tournament will be in ping-pong; to sign up or for more information about Student Life activities, go to the office in Room 127 Muntz Hall.
